Modern Greek is a widely used language in Australia. It is a valuable asset for people working in professional fields such as medicine, psychology, social work, accounting, business, the law, politics, the public service, the arts and media (including journalism). Translators and interpreters in Modern Greek are employed in various areas, such as the courts, hospitals and multicultural television and radio. Greek is also a relevant subject for teachers as it is taught in numerous secondary and primary schools.

Greek has its roots in Ancient Greek, which is the source of much abstract and scientific vocabulary in English and many other modern languages.

Greek is available as a minor in Arts and also to students of all Faculties as an elective or General Education component. Students also have the option to study Greek within the Diploma of Languages, which may be taken concurrently with another degree program at UNSW.

Some of the Greek courses are also available through online/correspondence mode.
