Placement Guidelines for Prospective Students of Japanese
A step-by-step guide to enrol in Japanese language courses for Semester 2, 2008
This online placement is for students who wish to enrol in Japanese at UNSW for the first time.
Step 1: Read the information below and assess which course is most appropriate for your level of Japanese language knowledge.
If you are an absolute beginner in Japanese, please enrol to JAPN1000 in Semeser 1, 2009
Step 2: If you wish to enrol to any of the Japanese language course without the necessary prerequisites, you must complete the Online Application Form below so that the School can enrol you in the course you nominate.
Step 3: Once you have submitted the Online Application Form you will receive a reference number. Please keep this reference number safe.
Step 4:Please allow 5 working days for us to process your application. Check your enrolment details in myUNSW, and if your enrolment has not been updated after 5 working days, please email the School Office at languages@unsw.edu.au quoting your reference number and the course in which you wish to enrol.
Note: You will be contacted by email if a decision cannot be made on the basis of the information in the application form. In this case you may be required to provide further information or attend an interview with a discipline advisor.
Placement Guidelines
Students will be enrolled into courses in order of receipt of application. As some classes fill up very quickly, it is in a student’s best interests to submit the Online Application Form as soon as possible.
IMPORTANT: Students from other Faculties who wish to undertake language courses to fulfil elective or general education requirements should ensure that these courses count towards the requirements of their degree programs with the relevant Program Authority.
If you feel that your starting course is not appropriate for your language level once the semester has started, please contact the course convenor to discuss the feasibility of changing to an upper/lower course. Any changes to enrolment must be approved by the Discipline Advisor and finalised by Friday, 1 August 2008.

JAPN1001 Japanese Communication 1B
- if you have completed approximately 70 hours of learning basic spoken Japanese or have equivalent knowledge, and can write Hiragana, Katakana and approximately 50 kanji
JAPN2001 Japanese Communication 2B
- if you have completed HSC Japanese Continuers within the last two years, or
- if you have completed HSC Japanese Extension with a grade of below (but not including) 40 marks, or
- if you hold a certificate in Japanese Language Proficiency Test, Level 4
AND/OR
have knowledge of Basic Japanese Grammar except keigo, passive and causative, and have knowledge of approximately 250 kanji
JAPN3001 Japanese Communication 3B
- if you have completed Japanese Extension with a grade of 40 marks and above, or
- if you hold a certifcate in Japanese Language Proficiency Test, Level 3
JAPN3401 Japanese Communication 4B
- if you hold a certificate in Japanese Language Proficiency Test, Level 2 or have equivalent knowledge
Further Information
If your knowledge of Japanese does not fall into one of the above categories OR if you wish to receive further advice about appropriate courses for your Japanese language proficiency, please complete the online questionnaire. You will be contacted by the School via email after your submitted questionnaire is reviewed. Some of your experience can be drawn from the following examples:
- Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 1 holders
- students who have studied Japanese in university other than UNSW
- students who have lived in Japan for over 6 months
- students who studied Japanese in high school but did not take HSC or equivalent test
- students who took HSC more than two years ago
